She was 17 and pregnant carrying the shame of disappointing family members. Walking among peers at school who were excited about college and living the free life. She wasn't excited; happy for them but sad for herself because she was pregnant. Society says pregnancy out of wedlock equals welfare, no future, and sometimes abortion. Most young ladies succumb to the stigma and this becomes their story. Not for her. She decided that she would not be a statistic. She made a mistake, but there was no reason why she still could not pursue her dreams. There it is. A made up mind, she would be somebody. She would be the positive example of what hard work, dedication, and perseverance looked like. She took the chance; in college away from home with her 10 month old baby. It’s their journey now; the journey that will lead to endless possibilities for the both of them. She did it. She completed her first year…her second…and then her fifth and final year. She broke the statistical curse and proved all of society wrong. She believed she could, so she did. From that moment forward the cycle of poverty and illiteracy was broken. Graduation arrived, and as she looks into the eyes of her then five year old son she says “We did it, but our journey has just begun.”
I am SHE. This is MY story.
